What's Up Wednesday - October 15

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop created by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk to help writers stay in touch. I can't stop listening to Fall Out Boy's new song, "Immortals." It's actually getting a little worrying.


What I'm Reading: 
Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan (last book in Heroes of Olympus which is the sequel to Percy Jackson and the Olympians) arrived Friday. I started it around two and read it in one unstoppable spree of nine hours. I considered slowing down, actually savoring it since it's the last book, but it just wasn't possible. I wasn't going to sleep that night without finishing. This could not have been a more perfect ending to the series. I don't think I have ever loved a conclusion this much, and that's including Deathly Hallows. I haven't actually started reading anything else since.

What I'm Writing: 
Still LP, though I've been taking this week off writing.

What Works for Me: 
To do lists. I have multiple sets of them in an Excel spreadsheet so that I can stay organized. There's one for the day, one for grad school stuff, one for homework, one for things to get done that week, and another for things that I need to do but don't have a set time frame.  It helps me to make sure that I don't forget to do anything and makes me feel accomplished when I delete things from the list.

What Else I've Been Up To: 
It's been an insane week. I just got a job as a tutor for a stats class that I took last year, overseeing a study group. I started yesterday and it's been a steep learning curve. The class I'm tutoring for has a different professor and let's just say she has different methods from the one I had. I'll be doing a lot of stats review this weekend.

I love the idea of to do lists. Maybe I need to start making those for all of the billion things I need to get accomplished.

I'm an obsessive list-maker - it's the only way to keep everything organised!

I really need to read the Heroes of Olympus series, as I loved the Percy Jackson books.

I love it when books suck you in like that! I'm a total book junkie myself. "No really, I can quit any time I want"

Congrats on the tutor job! Sounds very exciting!

I have the same problem with conclusion books, especially epic ones like HP or Percy Jackson. If I'm into a book, I will rearrange everything on my schedule - including work and school! - to finish that bad boy, haha :)

I am a tutor for high school students in my neighborhood and I love it! BUT I have to reteach myself Stats to help one of my clients next semester. I haven't seen some of it in a long time! Good luck with your tutoring gig! Also, I love your to-do lists. I do one for each day, but I really like yours. May have to steal!

I hear a lot of questions from writers asking other people if they think something would work. A point of view. A tense. A story idea. A style of writing. A plot point. My answer is always the same. "Write the book the way it wants to be written. If it works, it works." Because, honestly, NO ONE can tell you if something is going to work or not without reading the completed story. Loner Main Characters the Norm?

When I was typing up the back summary for PERSONAL DEMONS, a question popped into my head. Why are almost all main characters loners? Think about it. Most of them only have one or two friends at most. They don't involve themselves in a lot of activities. They don't have a lot of dates. They don't run around texting twenty people at once, or even a few. Is that to cut down on the number of characters that have to have a purpose? Is it to keep the story from getting too bogged down in unnecessary day-to-day activities? But the truth is, a lot of teenagers aren't like that. Teenagers don't just have one or two friends. He Said, She Said: Dialogue Writing Tips

Dialogue is a tricky thing to get right, but it often takes up a good-sized portion of every book. Dialogue can bring two characters closer together, drive them further apart, reveal important information, and display any number of things. Use double quotation marks to open and close each line of dialogue. If there's a dialogue tag (said, asked, responded, quipped), use a comma, unless the dialogue requires an exclamation or question mark. If there isn't a dialogue tag, then there should be a period, unless it needs an exclamation or question mark. Beware of using an excessive amount of exclamation marks. If there's a lot of tension in a scene, the dialogue and actions of the characters should exhibit that. Also, there should be a new paragraph for each new speaker. When writing dialogue, keep the character in mind. Take their age, schooling, background, and who they are talking to into consideration.
