Favorite Classics

I was one of those kids in school that absolutely loved to read...except for books assigned for class. I got through high school on a combination of skimming through parts of assigned reading and Sparknotes. But there were a few classics that I found myself reading avidly despite the fact that I would be tested on them.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
This is definitely one of my favorites. The writing is beautiful, the story is not at all slow, and it really gave me a lot to think about. Someday I'm going to buy it and add it to my collection so that I can read it again when I'm not under the pressure of a daily sheet of questions.

1984 by George Orwell
Another one of my favorites. It's scary how much of this book rings true in life today.

Animal Farm by George Owell
The only book from my freshman year of high school that I look back on with fondness. Four years later and I'm still pondering it. There's a lot of truth in this one as well.

The Giver by Lois Lowry
I still remember reading ahead in class and fighting down tears over certain parts. Once we finished, I tracked down the second and third book in the series from the library and devoured them as well.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
This book was another one that I secretly read ahead during class and fought down tears over. It's a brilliant and powerful book that really affected me as a middle school student.

How did you feel about classics in school? What are some of your favorites?
